Do cellphones cause cancer?

We have all heard rumors about different products causing cancer, and some take the news more seriously than others. One such product is cell phones, which have been studies for a number of years for their cancer-causing properties.

Recently, however, one of the leading cancer research facilities has issued an official warning to faculty and staff- “Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.”

University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute director, Dr. Ronald Herberman believes that although the data is still incomplete, there is a definite link between cell phone use and cancer. He warns that it is much better to use caution, rather than wait for a definitive study to be released. This is particularly true when discussing our children.

Dr. Herberman recommends that parents only let their children use cell phones for emergencies. There are several ways to safeguard against radiation from cell phones. Hands free devices such as headsets and ear-pieces keep the phone away from the brain, which is crucial. There are also devices that can block radiation emitted from cell phones by up to 97%. As Dr. Herberman suggests, it is better to be safe than sorry.
