Can Bells Palsy be Caused by an auto accident?

On September 25, 2008, in Uncategorized, by admin

Bell’s palsy is a temporary paralysis or weakness that usually occurs on one side of the face when there is damage to facial nerves. The condition may also be referred to as acute idiopathic facial palsy or Bell’s palsy syndrome.

Trauma is one of the more common causes of facial paralysis. Head trauma such as may occur in a car accident can result in skull fractures. If these skull fractures occur near or involve the course of the facial nerve, the nerve can be injured. Swelling of the nerve can result in further injury and possibly brain injury. In addition, because the facial nerve courses across the face, a deep cut on the face can potentially cut the facial nerve. Finally, certain surgical procedures can result in injury to the facial nerve.

Driving under the Influence of Texting

On September 18, 2008, in Uncategorized, by admin

According to a recent British study, SENDING a text message on a mobile phone while driving is more dangerous than being drunk or under the influence of drugs.

The group studied were betweeen the ages of 17 and 24. Interestingly enough, the reaction times an distraction level were significant even if they were just reading the messages or ignoring the messages.

This study comes out on the heels of a tragic train accident last week.

The National Transportation Safety Board examined cell phone records after two 14-year-old boys said they had received text messages from the engineer moments before the commuter train sped through a red light and crashed into an oncoming freight train.

Sanchez, 46, died in the commuter locomotive that slammed head-on into a freight in Los Angeles Friday, killing 24 passengers and injuring nearly 140.

Members of the FRA’s railroad safety advisory committee had been considering restricting electronic device usage in the locomotive cab as it develops new safety rules, agency spokesman Steven Kulm said. He said the group discussed the matter in meetings earlier in the year. At a minimum, this safety rule should be in effect for public transportation and should be considered for our highways as well.

Golf Cart Injuries on the Rise

On September 16, 2008, in Product Safety, by admin

Gold carts or golf cart type vehicles are being used more and more these days for several reasons. Unfortunately injuries from their use are on the rise.

In findings published in the June issue of the Journal of Trauma: Injury, Infection and Critical Care, UAB researchers found that there were more than 48,255 golf-cart related injuries between 2002 and 2005, with the highest injury rates observed in males 10-19 years old and those older than 80 years old.

The use of golf carts in industrial settings has also created safety issues. When a cart collides with another vehicle, the cart always loses. This has prompted OSHA to look at setting safety standards in such vehicles.

Heart Disease Caused by Dental Neglect?

On September 15, 2008, in Product Safety, by admin

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, taking more than 17 million lives each year. The causes of this condition are well known; smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol.

New studies show that there is another culprit that contributes to the unhealthy heart. It turns out that dental neglect can lead to heart illness. The mouth is the dirtiest part of the human body and when a bacterial infection takes place, it can cause a catastrophic snowball effect that sometimes leads to heart failure or stroke. The constant battle of fighting off infection can leave veins and arteries stiff and encrusted, thus more likely to clog. So there is one more reason to keep a healthy smile.

Ayurveda is a traditional Indian medicine that dates back thousands of years. Today, it can be purchased from online vendors, in over 200 different forms. There have been many reported benefits from using Ayurveda, but there have also been many reports of Ayurveda containing heavy metals like lead and mercury.

In the United States, Ayurveda is sold to the upper class at events like golf expos and yoga seminars. The concepts behind include meditation and yoga and are generally quite healthy, however some archaic practices like the use of heavy metals, chanting, and astrology are shown to have no positive effects and in this case can be quite dangerous. It is important to understand what you’re undertaking whenever you decide to try an alternative medicine. Although these products are commonly found in local health stores, Florida law still holds the manufacturer responsible for damages casued by products sold in this state.

Rear end collision can lead to TMJ

On September 2, 2008, in Uncategorized, by admin

Rear end collisions typically result in a whiplash injury.

Whiplash involves a sudden movement of the head that can lead to the tearing of muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues. It is a common result of a rear-end automobile collision, and can happen at low as well as high speeds.

A new study by Hanna Sale and Annika Isberg, Delayed Temporo-mandibular Joint Pain and Dysfuntion Induced by Whiplash Trauma, 138 J. Am. Dental Assn. 1084 (2007) reports that one in three people will experience TMJ, pain in their temporo-mandibular joint, within one year following a whiplash injury. This is at an incidence rate of five times higher than what is found in the general population. For some reason, women experience this more that men.

If you are invollved in a rear end collsion or any collision involving a whiplash injury, and you feel you need the help of a personal injury lawyer, be sure to find an attorney with litigation experience.
